Eco-Film Series
Dammed to Extinction From the film's web site: For eons, a one-of-a-kind population of killer whales has hunted chinook salmon along the Pacific Coast of the United States. For the last 40 years, renowned whale scientist Ken Balcomb has closely observed them. He’s familiar with a deadly pattern, as salmon numbers plummet orcas starve. The orcas need roughly a million salmon a year, where to find a million fish? The solution, says Balcomb, is getting rid of four fish-killing dams 500 miles away on the largest tributary to what once was the largest chinook producing river on earth. The film writer, Steve Hawley, will participate on the post-film panel. Drs. Gordon Grant, Lisa Ballance (new Director of the Marine Mammal Institute in Newport), and Kirk Schroeder will also be on the panel. We are also collaborating with the Great Old Broads For Wilderness in showing the film. Trailer: https://vimeo.com/355409642

Eco-Film Series
The Beaver Believers The film follows Beaver Believers out into some truly spectacular western landscapes, where beaver have already begun to transform damaged watersheds. We learn of the many challenges that stand in the way of larger scale efforts to use beaver as a restoration tool, including trapping, which is tragically still legal in most states. Perhaps most importantly, we meet incredible people who, undaunted by climate change, are working tirelessly to protect and restore beaver out on the landscape, who embody the spirit and joy that comes from "thinking like a beaver," who show us that collaboration and watershed restoration truly are possible. Can we let the beaver come home?
The post-film panel includes the filmmaker, Sarah Koenigsberg, and Jakob Shockey of Beaver State Wildlife Solutions , the state expert on installing beaver-friendly devices to prevent flooding. Brian Bangs is a fisheries biologist who works for both ODFW and USFWS and promotes beavers as fish saviors. He was in an Oregon Field Guide episode in 2015: https://www.pbs.org/video/oregon-field-guide-oregon-chub-recovery/ . Chris Jordan is a NOAA fisheries biologist who promotes beavers to enhance fish and wildlife habitat. Chris was also in an Oregon Field Guide episode (second segment) in 2010 about attracting beavers back to eastern Oregon streams to improve salmon habitat. https://www.opb.org/television/programs/ofg/episodes/2204/ trailer: https://www.thebeaverbelievers.com
